A Cheap Disney Souvenir? Not Possible!

There are so many different souvenirs at Disney World. Seriously, just take a walk through the World of Disney store and you will be amazed at how many different souvenirs there are. However, there are ways to save money on souvenirs, while getting something a little unique to remember your trip by.

I am talking about penny press machines. I had forgotten about these machines, until our last Disney trip. Our daughter was two at the time we were there and she would get a little restless sometimes. So, my husband would take her to the closest penny press machine and let her pick a design. It was great! She loved it and now anytime we go somewhere, and she sees a penny press machine, that is the souvenir she asks for.

Tips When Pressing Pennies

The penny press machines cost 51 cents and the recommendation is that you try to use pennies from before 1982. The reason for this is that in 1982 they started making pennies with both copper and zinc and if you press these pennies the zinc will show through. We have a penny with some silver streaks on it and it's because it was made after 1982.

We got this coin in Epcot at the
Germany pavilion. See the silver
streaks?

Another suggestion is to have the face of the penny all the way to the right. This way the image will be pressed into the face side instead of the monument side, which can leave lines across the pressed image.

If you want to get your penny nice and shiny before pressing it there are many different methods. The most common suggestions you will see are using vinegar and salt, or ketchup. After you have scrubbed the pennies using the method of your choice you can make a baking soda paste (just baking soda and water) and use that to shine the pennies.

To carry all the pennies around some people use M&M mini containers. We just used a coin purse and that worked for us. The kids might like to use the mini containers though, plus you can decorate them.

Penny Press Machines Around the World

There are hundreds of penny press machines all over Walt Disney World property. They are all over the parks, resort hotels, and Downtown Disney. I believe the water parks, miniature golf locations, and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex even have some. So chances are that no matter where you are on Disney property, a penny press machine is not that far away.

Once you find a penny press machine, you have 3-4 choices of what image you would like to be pressed on the coin. Usually the images are representative of where you are. For instance, the coin above was printed in Epcot at the Germany pavilion and so Mickey is dressed in German clothes and the coin says "Germany" and "Epcot" on it. Another coin we have has a picture of Hamm on it and it says "Toy Story Midway Mania!" and "Hollywood Studios", because this machine was right outside the Toy Story ride. We also have one with Chip 'n' Dale on it that was from The Land pavilion in Epcot. I believe it was by The Garden Grill Restaurant, because Chip 'n' Dale are part of that dining experience.

It is a fun way to keep track of where you were on your vacation. Since most of the coins will have the location and a character relevant to the location, it's almost like a map of different things you saw and experienced on your trip.

How to Display Your Coins

There are pressed penny books available to buy from many locations on Disney property or you can go online to places like Amazon. Depending on where you get the book and how many pennies it holds, it shouldn't run you more than $10. We bought one for our daughter at the Bronx Zoo and it was around $6 or $7 and holds 40 pennies and has 4 slots for pressed Quarters as well.

A more creative idea I have seen (and love!) is someone who put all of the pressed pennies on a matte in the shape of a Mickey head and then framed it. I really like this idea, it is a very fun way to display all of the coins and it makes it easy to relive your vacation.

Another good idea I have seen is making a charm bracelet out of all the pennies. It doesn't look like it would be too hard. You just have to get a chain bracelet and poke holes in the top of each penny. Such a creative idea!

We have already started thinking about which pressed penny machines we would like to find for the next trip and we are definitely going to do something creative to display them next time. I'm hoping to get enough so we can make the Mickey image and frame it. I really love that idea!

So if you are looking for a fun, but inexpensive souvenir, I would seriously look at the penny press machines. My daughter loved picking out the image and helping my husband turn the crank. Plus, you can get creative and come up with a fun way to display them, so you are always reminded of your trip!

Rainy Days at Disney

It's a rainy day where I am, so I though a post about rainy days at Disney would be fitting. When it's dreary at home, it usually leaves me feeling kind of blah, but a rainy day at Disney is still fun. I think the saying goes "A rainy day at Disney is still better than a sunny day at the office" and it is so true. There are many things you can do to still have fun when it rains.

Go to the Parks Anyway

People do this and I can understand why. The crowd levels are so much lower than when it is not raining. We went to Animal Kingdom on a day when it was overcast and rainy, it wasn't pouring or anything, but the crowd level there was still a lot lower than it would have been if it was sunny out. We didn't mind it at all! It was nice to have so few people in the park and a short wait for Expedition Everest.

If it is really raining you can buy a poncho from multiple locations in the parks, resorts, and Downtown Disney. People have said that they actually had more fun in the rain at Disney, because of the emptiness in the park. So, if you don't mind riding the rides or walking around the parks in the rain, I say throw on your poncho and head for the parks! You will probably get some pretty fun pictures too!

Expedition Everest

Shopping

If touring the parks in the rain is not your thing, then you can always check out the many shops that are on Disney property. You will still have to walk in the rain a little, but Downtown Disney has many different shopping experiences and some of the stores have fun themes. I can spend hours in World of Disney. That store has everything you could possibly want that is related to Disney, it is huge! There is even a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in the store.

If you get stuck in the rain at the parks and want to wait it out there is plenty of shopping available in the parks as well. A good one for shopping in the rain is the Emporium at the Magic Kingdom which pretty much spans the length of Main Street USA, so you have plenty of things to look at and you can get from one end of Main Street to the other without stepping outside. The themes of the stores in the parks can be pretty fun too. Take Sir Mickey's for example. Do you remember Willy the Giant from Mickey and the Beanstalk? Well, if you go to Sir Mickey's make sure to look up, because you will be able to see Willy peeking through the ceiling. It's pretty cool and another example of the great details in all aspects of Disney.

Taking Time to Explore Your Resort

The rain can be the perfect excuse to just stay at your resort and do some exploring. Disney vacations can be very busy, so if you have a reason to spend the day at your hotel it will make for a nice relaxing resort day. Disney resorts have so many things to offer. Between the activities, shopping, restaurants, and walking around to see the details that are in the resort, there is so much to do. You could easily spend a day at your resort and not run out of things to do. Just make sure you get your activity list when you check-in and there should be a folder, with services and activities the resort offers, in your room.

Exploring Other Resorts

If you feel like you have seen everything you want to see at your resort then you can try wandering around other hotels. It's fun to make a day of resort exploring. If you head over to the Magic Kingdom you can hop on the monorail and do the loop of monorail hotels. Those include: Grand Floridian (and The Villas at Grand Floridian), Polynesian Village (DVC Villas being constructed there), and Contemporary (and Bay Lake Tower).

The Epcot resorts are fun to explore too. There you will find the Beach Club (and Beach Club Villas), Yacht Club, and Boardwalk Inn and Villas. The Beach Club (BC) and Yacht Club (YC) are right next to each other and both have really nice lobbies. You can check out the fun shops and the dining options here. We enjoyed breakfast at Cape May Cafe and lunch at Beaches and Cream. After you are done with BC and YC, you can walk over to the Boardwalk and check out the Boardwalk Inn. The Boardwalk Inn also has a very nice lobby and there are shopping and dining options along the Boardwalk, though you will have to walk outside to get to each shop and restaurant, so bring an umbrella if it is raining.

Those are just some examples, Disney has over 20 hotels that you can visit and explore (within reason if you are not actually staying at that resort).

Pamper Yourself

A rainy day can also be a good excuse to pamper yourself! Disney has spas on property that you can make reservations for and just relax and enjoy. Many of the Disney hotels offer some kind of spa service. One example is Senses, which is located at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa also has a Senses spa available for you to make reservations. If you are looking for a way to relax after spending some busy days in the park, don't hesitate to treat yourself to some pampering. You're on vacation and you deserve it!

These are just some ideas of what to do when it rains. Disney really does have so much to do on property, you will never be bored or have nothing to do when it rains. That's one of the reasons I love Disney. The options of things to do seem endless, so no two trips ever have to be the same. You can discover something new with every visit :-)

Disney for the Big Kids

Yes, Disney is a place that will make you feel like a kid again. However, there are plenty of things for adults to do that don't have to include kids. Sometimes you need that night out with just the adults and there is nothing wrong with that!

You can head over to the Boardwalk and check out Jellyrolls and Atlantic Dance Hall. If you are not staying at an Epcot resort hotel, you can take a bus to Hollywood Studios and either walk or take the Friendship boat to the Boardwalk. There is no bus from Epcot to Boardwalk Inn, due to it's close proximity. In order to walk to the Boardwalk from Epcot you would need to walk through Epcot and that means you would need to pay to get into Epcot, just to walk through it. So walking or boating from Hollywood Studios is the best way to get there.

Both Jellyrolls and Atlantic Dance Hall are adults only venues, so that makes them a great option for an adult only night out. Jellyrolls is really cool, because they have dueling pianos! They take requests and, according to Disney's website, you are encouraged to try to stump the piano players. There is a $10 cover charge for Jellyrolls, so just remember that if you decide to go there.

Atlantic Dance Hall is right down the way from Jellyrolls at the end of the Boardwalk. This is the place to go if you are in the mood to dance. They will either have a live band or a DJ, depending on the night. Either way this is a great place to let loose on the dance floor!

The Boardwalk also has nightly entertainment right outside. Jugglers, magicians, and other entertainers usually start performing around 7. You can grab some pizza from the Pizza Window and sit down to enjoy the entertainment as  you eat. There are also some games along the Boardwalk where you can try your luck to win a prize.

If you are looking for a quiet place to eat and you are okay with spending quite a bit on dinner, then you should consider Victoria and Albert's at the Grand Floridian. Dinner here is easily over $60 a person, but they have been a AAA Five Diamond Award recipient since 2000, so they know what they are doing. Something to note about this restaurant, children under 10 are not allowed to dine here.

Victoria and Albert's
(Picture from Disney's Website)

Another dining option at Victoria and Albert's is The Queen Victoria Room. This room is limited to 4 tables, seating 2 at each table, and has a 10 course menu. The cost, at the time of writing, is $225 per person and they offer wine pairings from $105 per person. It is very expensive, but keep in mind all the food you get and you are in a private room with only four tables.

The Queen Victoria Room

For the mother of all experiences at Victoria and Albert's you can go for the Chef's Table Dinner. For this dinner you will be eating in the actual kitchen of Victoria and Albert's and the chef will be interacting with you throughout your meal. This is also a 10 course meal and the table is only available for one party. They table can seat up to 10 people or as few as 2. The cost is $250 per person for the meal and $105 per person for the wine pairing. The chef will give samples and recommendations throughout the 3 hour meal.

Chef's Table Dinner
(Picture from Disney's Website)

For all three of the dining experiences at Victoria and Albert's there is a dress code. Men must wear dinner jackets, dress pants or slacks, and shoes, but ties are optional. Women may wear a cocktail dress, nice dress, pants suit, or a skirt with a blouse. Things that are not permitted: jeans, shorts, capri pants, sandals, flip-flop, and tennis shoes. I would also keep in mind that this restaurant, for all three dining experiences, books up quickly. If you know you want to have dinner here, then I would try for reservations at the 180 day mark, especially for the Queen Victoria Room and the Chef's Table Dinner.

If golf is your thing, then you are in luck! Disney World has three golf courses with championship layouts that play to a par of 72. The three golf courses are Disney's Magnolia Golf Course, Disney's Palm Golf Course, and Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course. If you are just starting out they have a golf course for less skilled golfers too,Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course.

Disney also does a lot of tours that are adult only. For instance, the Keys to the Kingdom Tour in Magic Kingdom, which is a 5 hour behind the scenes walking tour, is an adults only tour.  There is also an adults only Segway tour at Fort Wilderness called Wilderness Back Trail Adventure. These are just a couple of examples, but there are many other tours available the are geared to adults. For a complete list of tours click here.

So, if you have a friend that asks why you would want to go to Disney, because "Disney is for kids"...just send them some of these links. There are plenty of things for adults to do in Disney World. It's great to feel like a kid, but it's nice to know Disney covers the adults when we want to feel like adults :-)

Weekly Tip #5

Dining at Disney: How to Keep the Cost Down

Eating in restaurants can be expensive at Disney, but there are ways to keep the cost down and still be able to enjoy a meal out. Whether you have a dining budget for your Disney trip or not, most people like to save money where they can. It feels good to know you saved some money, especially since Disney vacations are far from cheap!

My tip for this week is simple, instead of having lots of dinners in restaurants, try to limit to breakfasts and lunches, especially if you are eating at the buffets. The reason is the price goes up with every meal, unless we are talking about some of the special dining experiences like Cinderella's Royal Table (that's going to be a jaw-dropping price no matter what time of day you go).

If a restaurant serves both lunch and dinner, chances are the lunch is just a scaled down version of dinner. They usually offer most of the same items in a smaller portion size and for a reduced price. We did this for most of our trip. We had either a big breakfast or a big lunch and only dined out for dinner a couple of times. When we did have dinner out it was more of a splurge and well worth the price. For instance, the day we had reservations for California Grill we had quick service food for the rest of the day and then we splurged at dinner. Totally worth it!

Contemporary Resort

Sundae Sampler at California Grill

As an example you can see the Biergarten's lunch and dinner menus on Disney's website. There really is not much of a difference in the food offered, just the price of the buffet changes. If you want to see the jaw-dropping prices I was talking about for Cinderella's Royal Table, just click here. Granted, you get a lot of extras with this meal (and I hope to get reservations here for the next trip), but it is very expensive. I don't think the table service restaurants, like 50's Prime Time Cafe, change the menu prices for lunch and dinner quite as much as the buffet restaurants.

(Picture from Disney's Website)

50's Prime Time Cafe
(Picture from Disney's Website)

Another tip, you can plan your lunch closer to dinner time. If you eat at a time that is between lunch and dinner you will still get the lunch price, the restaurant will be less crowded, and you won't need a big meal for dinner. Some people like to plan their breakfast buffet late, because I guess sometimes the restaurant will start putting out some lunch items and then it is almost like a brunch. I have never experienced this, we always plan our breakfasts earlier in the morning, but I have heard from several people that they have experienced this.

So, there you go! If you like dining at the buffets (and they are really good!), I would recommend having breakfast or lunch there to keep the cost down. With the money you save on the meals you can buy fun souvenirs or put it towards your next Disney trip ;-)

Kidani Village

During our last visit to Disney World we stayed at Kidani Village. If you are looking for a quiet stay at Disney, I definitely recommend this resort. We loved staying here and will definitely be back!

Kidani Village was added as a DVC section to Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House. We previously had breakfast at Boma and loved Animal Kingdom Lodge, so we were very happy when we were able to get reservations for Kidani.

When we first arrived at Kidani Village we noticed that the lobby was much smaller than Jambo House, but no less beautiful. I've said it before, but it is so true, Disney is great with details. So, even though it may not have been as "grand" we were still very impressed by the lobby. I loved the chandeliers and the decor in the lobby.

There is a huge window that looks out to the Savannah and stairs that lead down from the lobby to the door that leads to the viewing area outside. The lobby has some seating, so you can just hang out there if you want and watch the animals through the big window. For a better view of the animals, head down the stairs and out the door (Sanaa is also downstairs from the lobby). They have a very roomy area to watch the animals, complete with a fire pit and rocking chairs. There is a cast member out in the viewing area who will be able to answer any questions you have. When we were there in January 2014 we were lucky enough to see a baby zebra and baby giraffe that were on the Savannah. It's pretty relaxing to spend some time out there just observing the animals.

Looking back from the viewing area at
the huge lobby window. You can also
see the fire pit and rocking chairs.

The lights that are around the viewing area.

I loved this fluffy headed bird.

Watching the giraffes follow the truck
was pretty funny.
They clearly know who feeds them.

More of the fluffy headed bird.

Baby zebra to the left :-)

The fact that these animals were right outside our hotel was pretty awesome! The kids loved watching them and it was a perfect activity for downtime from the parks. They never seemed to get tired of seeing the animals and the excitement was genuine every time.

Activities

Watching the animals is only one of many activities that they offer at Kidani. When you check-in the cast member will give you a map of the resort, which includes the viewing areas, and a list of different activities offered at the resort. Some activities are free and others will have a fee, but they list that on the activity sheet so there are no surprises.

A map of the resort you receive when you check-in.
Notice the shape of the Kidani building. It is
supposed to look like Water Buffalo horns.

A list of activities available at the resort.

A list of activities available at the resort.

There are so many fun things offered at Kidani, I would try to make time for some of them (if your schedule allows). One thing we wanted to try was the night viewing of the animals. They actually give you night vision goggles to view the animals. It's a pretty fun activity! They have different culinary experiences for adults to try, like Wine Tasting at Jiko or you can dine with an animal expert at Sanaa. It is definitely worth it to hold on to these activity sheets and try to fit one of them in.

Dining

Between Kidani Village and Jambo House, you have many dining options. At Kidani there is Sanaa, which faces the Savannah and has large windows so you can watch the animals as you dine. Jambo House has Jiko - The Cooking Place, Boma - Flavors of Africa, and The Mara. We have not yet had dinner at Jiko, but I have heard the food is delicious.

We have had the breakfast buffet at Boma twice and loved it there. I think next time we will try dinner, but breakfast is delicious. They have so many options and the Jungle Juice is so good! If you or anyone in your party is not a very adventurous eater, don't worry, they have plenty of standard buffet options available. Both times we dined at Boma the cast members were great. They were very friendly and attentive. They even let us bring our stroller in, because our son had fallen asleep. Love Boma and can't wait to make reservations there again!

The Mara is the quick service option at Animal Kingdom Lodge. They have some pretty good food here too, but I think I was expecting more options. It is definitely less crazy than the food courts at the values and more organized. You fill out an order form for your choices and they will give you a slip so you can pay while your food is being prepared. Great system and there was really never a line. They have a refrigerated area where you can get desserts and bottled drinks. There is plenty of seating, so you shouldn't have to worry about finding somewhere to sit.

The Pool

One thing I wish we were able to experience more was the pool. We were only at Kidani for six nights and we didn't set aside enough time to enjoy the pool. The one time we did go it was so much fun! They have a zero depth entry section, so you can just walk in, which is great for little ones and those with disabilities. Another nice feature they have is a pool lift, for those that may have trouble walking into the pool. There are also pool towels available, so you do not have to bring your towels down from your room.

There are two pools available, one at Jambo House and one at Kidani Village. The pool at Jambo is the Uzima Pool and at Kidani it is Samawati Springs Pool. We used Samawati and loved it. The water slide was the most popular part of the pool with our group. Our friends have a daughter who was six at the time we were there and I can't even count how many times she went down the slide! Now for the next trip the water slide is an important feature in our hotel choice :-)

The Room

We stayed in 2 bedroom suite at Kidani and it was so spacious. Since it was built specifically for DVC and was not one of the first ones built, the rooms are pretty big. The bathroom in the master suite is ridiculously big. There is a jacuzzi tub, a pretty big separate shower with glass doors, a double sink with storage below, a separate room for the toilet, and a closet. It is seriously huge and kind of felt like wasted space.

In the living area of the room there is a full kitchen, with a full size refrigerator. We did cook some meals in the room, so it was very nice to have the stove there. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the cookware and utensils you will need, they even have a coffee maker and wine glasses. Across from the kitchen is the table with a bench on one side and two chairs on the other side.

The dining area and television.

Lighting above the table.

There is a pull-out sofa (queen size) in front of the television and a chair that actually pulls out to a twin sleeper. The television stand has drawer space for anyone that needs the extra room or if someone is sleeping on the pull-out. Someone in our group slept on the pull-out for the six nights we were there and said it was very comfortable. There is also a sliding glass door that leads out to the long balcony.

The view from the balcony.

In the living area you will also find a closet and the washer and dryer. I can't tell you how great it was to have the washer and dryer in the room. I know some people don't like to do laundry on vacation, but we didn't mind. The kids would go to sleep early and the adults stayed up to plan out the next day, so we just did laundry then. It saved a lot of space in the luggage for souvenirs ;-)

The big bonus was that there was a third full bathroom in the living area. It was great for us, because we had an adult sleeping on the pull-out, so this way he had his own space to get ready in the morning. Great feature that a lot of the older DVC resorts don't have.

Both the bedrooms were very nice and a good size. The master bedroom had the ridiculously big bathroom that I already told you about, but the tile design is nice.

The tile design in the bathroom.

We loved the jacuzzi tub that was in the bathroom! After a long day at the park, those jets are good for your feet. There was a king bed and a dresser with the television and plenty of drawer space. We were able to put the desk against the wall by the bed and move the twin pull-out chair in the room for our daughter. Even with the twin sleeper open and the pack and play open for our son, we still had plenty of room to move around. It was great!

The second bedroom had two queen size beds. Again, this is a nice feature with the newer DVC resorts, because some of the older ones will have a queen bed and a queen pull-out sofa instead of a second bed. There is a separate closet in the second bedroom with a decent amount of space. The bathroom is your standard shower/tub combo bathroom. Both the master suite and the second bedroom have sliding glass doors that lead to the balcony.

Half of the balcony.

The full length of the balcony.

When you enter your room for the first time there will be a folder that has some pamphlets in it. Definitely take the time to look through this. It basically lets you know everything that is offered at the hotel. From the activities, to dining, to services offered, it is a pretty informative packet. There is also information on Disney Vacation Club and the Disney Visa card. So if you have been think about joining or getting the card, you can get a little more information.

The Service

The service at Kidani was great! We only had a few bumps while we were staying there. One of the bigger bumps was a problem with our Magicbands. For some reason we had trouble getting everyone's bands linked to the room. We spent the first three nights down at Concierge trying to get it fixed. The second night we had to go down to the Concierge, they gave everyone in our group three extra fastpasses, per person, per day for the rest of our trip! So nice of them to throw some pixie dust our way for the Magicband problems.

Anytime we had a question they were quick to answer and most people were so friendly. I say most, because I did get some less than magical attitude from a few cast members. I ended up sending an email when we got home and Beth from Disney called me a few days after it was sent and apologized, assuring me they would address the situation. I wish I had said something when we were there, but we were so busy, I just didn't address it. I would recommend that if you have a problem to talk to management at the hotel so they can talk to the cast members right away. Beth was great though, the Disney service didn't end when we left the resort.

The cast members at Boma and The Mara were great as well. Friendly service and they were on top of everything. We had a problem with one of our Rapid Refill mugs not working at The Mara and they gave us a new one. We had very pleasant dining experiences at both locations.

Tips

If you are trying to decide between Jambo House and Kidani, here are a couple of tips we learned on this past trip.

The bus picks up and drops off first at Kidani. It was nice to know that, no matter how crowded the bus was going to get from the two stops, we would most likely get a seat since we were picked up first. Plus, on the way home we were dropped off first. So, if we ended up standing for that ride, we knew that we didn't have to wait for the unload at Jambo first.

The second tip I would give for Kidani Village would be to ask for a room close to the lobby. If you get one of the rooms at the end of the "horns" (see map above), you will be very far from the lobby. We requested close to the lobby and had a very short walk to the buses and to Jambo House when we had reservations at Boma or were eating at The Mara.

The Conclusion

Kidani is a great resort and we would happily return there. It was nice to have Jambo House so close, you can walk there in 5-10 minutes (depending on where your room is and how fast you walk). Also, it is a quiet resort. It is not like some other resorts that are in the middle of busy areas. If you want a quiet resort, Kidani is for you. It is a very relaxing experience and the resort is beautiful. You could spend so much time just wandering around and looking at all the details Disney has included.

Then, of course, there is the main attraction, the animals. Even if you are staying in a standard view room, like we did, you still have an opportunity to see the animals. Not just at the viewing areas, but also when you step into the hallway. They have big windows in the hallways that look out onto the Savannah. So, we may not have had a Savannah view room, but all we had to do was literally step into the hallway and we could see the animals.

With all of the activities and dining experiences offered at both Kidani and Jambo, you can easily have a resort only stay here and not run out of things to do. Plus, the cast members have a wonderful knowledge of the animals on the Savannah and of the history of Africa. They will also make you feel at home during your vacation.

Really, I cannot say enough good things about Kidani. One of these days we will stay there again and I am excited for that day!
